IF
YOU WANT TO REPAIR YOUR INFRARED CAMERA – keep in mind that factory
service centers typically have a policy of fixing the camera to
spec. Therefore, if you have your camera modified for digital
infrared capture (which is becoming a popular use for obsolete cameras)
they will probably fix that too! When I sent my coolpix 990 in
for service, they said the camera was REALLY messed up – that it was
taking strange photos because somebody replaced the glass in front of
the sensor… (FYI the reason the glass was replaced was because the new glass lets IR wavelength pass through). I
told them that it cost about $350 to get that mod done, and they were
nice enough to put it back into the shop and put the filter back
in. But they did reiterate to me that cameras sent in to the shop
will be fully repaired – not partially repaired, and that means they
are going to make the camera perform to factory specs. Boy was I
shocked when the 990 shot in color! Nikon said they don’t see too
many cameras modified like this – but they did hear about IR
conversion.
