  •  IF
YOU WANT TO REPAIR YOUR INFRARED CAMERA – keep in mind that factory
service centers typically have a policy of fixing the camera to
spec.  Therefore, if you have your camera modified for digital
infrared capture (which is becoming a popular use for obsolete cameras)
they will probably fix that too!  When I sent my coolpix 990 in
for service, they said the camera was REALLY messed up – that it was
taking strange photos because somebody replaced the glass in front of
the sensor… (FYI the reason the glass was replaced was because the new glass lets IR wavelength pass through).  I
told them that it cost about $350 to get that mod done, and they were
nice enough to put it back into the shop and put the filter back
in.  But they did reiterate to me that cameras sent in to the shop
will be fully repaired – not partially repaired, and that means they
are going to make the camera perform to factory specs.  Boy was I
shocked when the 990 shot in color!  Nikon said they don’t see too
many cameras modified like this – but they did hear about IR
    conversion.

  • DIGITALPHOTOGRAPHERS.NET PASSES THE 5,000 MEMBER MARK! YAY! I started
the forums at DPN a year and a half ago because I was being asked the
same questions repeatedly about camera settings, photoshop techniques,
etc… so I figured, why not put them on a searchable database? From
the onset, I made the terms of service strict – your post had to
request or provide information – and you couldn’t slam other people.
I’ve seen forums in the past implode because of a community that grew
nasty. I’m proud to say that we’ve assembled a large community of
caring people. Characteristically, so many more people browse the
forums than register and my stats say they’re here to read the vast
library which is a good thing. The number of page views is quite
something:  I’ve also pulled down the listing view of online
members – because now our typical number of people online is double
this, all you would see was the members online. Here’s an example:

I had no idea this would happen… DPN never intended to become the
portal it has become today, but thanks to such a great community of
really cool people who help others get going in digital photography….
I feel like it is the best for these reasons. THANK YOU so much.  Come join our digital community!   click here!

  • There’s a lot of discussion about RAW giving you a lot more room than
JPG for exposure latitude. This is true – you can rescue about one stop
more of overexposure, which is a lot (double) but, you would be amazed
how much you can pull out of an image that was shot overexposed, IN
JPG, because honestly – there is still a good amount of information in
the highlights as long as you don’t go over the top. And often, though
you may think an area is completely blown out, there is still a lot of
    information to rescue.

For example, here’s an image taken by
Kristen Alexander that was accidentally shot about two stops too hot.
Next to that is the image I was able to pull out of it using just a few
    steps:

  • HI CAN I ASK A FAVOR?
Google allows you to advertise by keyword phrase… in this
situation a photographer has paid for a ‘sponsored link’ to pop up when
you do a search for “Gary Fong”.  So this thing pops up on the
right every time someone searches for me, I guess he’s trying to find
wedding clients trading on my name and reputation.  Cute!  So
anyway, herein lies the rub.  Everytime someone clicks on it, it
costs anywhere between a quarter and two bucks – something like
that.  So can y’all click on it?  Considering this page gets
over 10,000 unique page viewers PER DAY let’s ring up some BLING!
Google lets you limit it anyway, but you know I just don’t know that I
like someone using my name to advertise.  So help me drain the
bank.  THANKS!  Here’s how to get involved!  Do a search
on Google for “gary fong”.  Then click on the “sponsored
link”  on the right… and cha-ching!  someone gets dinged a
quarter (or more)!  (or just click here)

  • DIGITAL INTENSIVE DALLAS REPORT

Hi from Dallas!  Here’s our really inquisitive group of high
energy people!  I have NEVER seen so many Nikon D100 owners in a
single group!  There must be one heck of a Nikon salesperson in
    this town.

    TESTIMONIALS!

“I feel like Gary just handed me the keys to a new car!”
    -Stacy Templeton, Houston TX

“Very Clear – immediately useful – very comfortable learning environment”
    - John Greene, Amarillo TX

“Thank you for demistyfing all of the myths we’ve come to accept as the “truth”. Knowing the science behind color management will change the way I ‘touch’ my images.
    – Heather Williams, Dallas TX

“I truly appreciated Gary’s approach and I definitely feel more comfortable shooting digital now. Although I still love film, it will be a lot of fun exploring the great creativity that digital provides. Thanks for everything and for your commitment in enlightening us!”
    -Alisa Marrow, Auston TX

    “Thanks for the CORRECT information”
    - Eric Frank, Greenwell Springs, LA

“Gary demystified so much of the digital world for me from capture to output. I will save hours and hours just from what I learned in a few minutes!
    -Kathleen Cain, Sherman TX

“I am going home full of ideas and I am extremely excited to get started. Having completed the seminar, I have a much better understanding of how digital works and more confidence in my ability to produce great photos… thanks! It was fun!
    -Ashlie Leatherwood, Addison TX

“I was extremely disappointed with digital, but after your class I have a lot more confidence and am ready to take the leap. After attending several seminars from “well established” photographers, this is the first time I feel like I have the correct information. Thanks!
    – Evelyn Adams, N. Richland Hill, TX

“Nothing short of a revelation. This is not information you will find anywhere else..”
    – Lynnly Labovitz, San Francisco CA

“Gary’s ability to convey his incredible technical knowledge is amazing and goes a long way in helping me to be a better photographer understanding digital from the pixel level. His innovative software is incredible and ingenious in the way it pleases the mind and the eyes…
    –Aaron Watson, Charlotteville VA

“Gary is the only person who has ever explained histograms so they make sense! Now I can imrpove my images without the ‘combs’ in the histogram.
    –Carolyn Marie, San Diego CA

Today we went out to do digital infrared, and the result was
awesome!  This is an image done with the Fuji S2 with the wrattan
    gel filter, ISO1600, 1/60sec at f2.8:

We a good amount of work on nailing down flash with digital.  I
did a lot with my Canon EOS1D Mark II – showing how if you shoot in
Manual Mode indoors with an omnidiffuser extended, you can mix in
ambient light in jut the right way, while still controlling the
aperture.  This next shot was done at f1.8, ISO 800 inside the
Hyatt Hotel in what was some pretty darned awful lighting.. in fact, we
put these two right under a spot of hot tungsten…

Then we went into how to shoot in typical “cocktail hour” situations…
this was shot at ISO800, M mode with a Canon EOS1D Mark II, 550EX flash
    on ETTL… 1/60sec at f2.8 with a 50mm f1.4 lens:

We also went into rear-curtain sync.  This is a technique where
the camera mixes ambient light in Program mode – mixing just enough
ambient and a long exposure automatically – to create a drag behind the
subject.  Great for wedding photography (grand entrances,
    first dance, etc)…

different cameras in different lighting situations. See how the
    FUJI S20, NIKON D70, NIKON D2H, FUJI S2 AND CANON EOS10D compared

I shot the S20 at a wedding! Really! And then compared

    THE FUJI S20 TEST -
    This camera features the
new Fuji Super CCD SR fourth generation sensor. This is the sensor
technology that actually has two sensors per pixel, a regular
pixel plus a “low sensitivity” pixel which helps the
camera pickup the blown out highlights that so often plague digital
images. Fuji claims a 4x dynamic range increase (this would be
two stops). Based on what I’ve seen with my early tests – well,
I’ll let you read the reviews and see the images…

    THE END OF THE FULL
    FRAME SENSOR??? -
The camera manufacturers are getting smart.
Rather than spend the ginormous bucks to have what’s called a
“full-frame sensor” as is found on the Canon EOS1DS,
KODAK PRO/N, they are now simply making the lens barrels smaller
so that you now have a “full-frame” sensor without
having any of the image area cropped out… CLICK

THE BEGINNINGS OF A POWERFUL PARTNERSHIP!
We’ve all been secretly giddy about this,
but finally it’s official. WeddingChannel.com and Pictage, Inc.
have formed an exclusive partnership. W.C. not only becomes an
equity owner of Pictage, but (most importantly), we’ve struck
a marketing deal that has huge benefits for our photographers.
The details will be outlined by both the WeddingChannel and Pictage’s
press releases, so there will be a lot of good news streaming
out in the next few days, especially at the convention. Michele
Celentano made the official announcement tonight about an hour
ago in Las Vegas, and there is going to be a large-scale cocktail
party at 4:30pm Monday to celebrate.
This strategic alliance partners two of
the most dynamic companies in their respective fields… not
only as market leaders, but as innovators. It was a treat to
meet W.C.’s CEO, Adam Berger, (who I’ve heard so much about…
what a JOB he’s done with WeddingChannel!…), and I’m thrilled
that I get to work with him as he joins Pictage’s board of directors.
As many of you know, Pictage has enjoyed unprecedented growth
and profitability, and it’s just a huge honor to know that a
prestigious organization such as W.C. found enough promise in
us to invest in a future together.
    “We spent two
    years researching
the industry to conclude Pictage was the best company to back
    – they really get it.” – Adam Berger – CEO of WeddingChannel.com.
I have to hand it to our CEO, Jason Kiefer
for an amazing job at the helm of the company. Adam Berger shared
with us that it was largely his belief in Jason’s seasoned executive
skills that motivated him to push for an investment in our company.
I’m right behind him in the cheering section. Jason is a phenomenal
executive, and so is Adam, and I believe the two of them will
make tremendous partners in the future. I couldn’t be happier
    about this.
Let’s find creative ways to celebrate!

    PROFITABILITY AND WEALTH-BUILDING
    HAS MOVED TO MIAMI!!!
This seminar was created in 2000
as a really elaborate response to the question, “How do
you charge higher fees?”. In my 20+ years in business, I’ve
seen so many photographers dip their rates at certain times of
the year to cover the bills… after all we are in a very seasonal
business. I found it was easy to avoid all of that by – well
